The mathematics web page provides clarification, guidance, and support to mathematics stakeholders, including districts, schools, parents, educators, and students, for the development and implementation of the K–12 mathematics Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and mathematics graduation requirements.
Announcements
Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS Adopted
At the April 2025 meeting, the State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted TEKS for middle school advanced mathematics. The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS are the same knowledge and skills as the current mathematics TEKS for grades 6–8 which have been rearranged and compacted to accelerate instruction for students enrolling in Algebra I in eighth grade.
The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS may be implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2025–2026 school year and are currently posted on the Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS Review web page.
Crosswalks between the grades 6, 7, and 8 Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS and the mathematics TEKS for grades 6, 7, 8 and Algebra I are now available. The crosswalks compare the organization of the advanced mathematics standards to the grades 6, 7, 8 and Algebra I mathematics TEKS and include explanations.

Texas Open Education Resources
Texas Open Education Resources (OER): state-developed materials where the underlying intellectual property is either owned by the state of Texas or it can be freely used and modified by the state in perpetuity. These materials are made freely available forever in digital form to Texas school districts and educators to use or modify as they see fit. They can be printed to ensure students have access to paper instructional materials. In the future, plans to ensure students have access to printed versions at cost. Finally, these materials are updated to improve their quality with new versions over time based on feedback from teachers and parents.

ESTAR / MSTAR
The purpose of the ESTAR/MSTAR Universal Screener are to help guide instructional decisions in relation to students’ readiness for algebra. The results, which are reported using the Response to Intervention tiers, can be used to help teachers determine if students are on track or at risk for meeting curricular expectations in algebra and for algebra readiness. Results also help teachers determine the intensity of the instructional support students need if they have been identified as at risk for not meeting curricular expectations in algebra and for algebra readiness. Teachers are able to monitor students’ risk status by administering comparable forms of the ESTAR/MSTAR Universal Screener in fall, winter, and early spring.

K - 2 Rapid Assessment
Educators now have several new K-2-math diagnostic tools. Texas A&M University and national early childhood math expert Dr. Herb Ginsberg of Columbia University have developed two types of diagnostic tools for K-2 teachers: A rapid assessment tool and a flexible interview assessment.
The rapid assessment offers a quick gauge of student ability. The flexible interview technique offers a deeper understanding of student cognitive ability based on underlying research in the area of questioning strategy. Together these tools add to teacher capabilities at the important early grades and allow educators to more effectively measure a student’s grasp of key math concepts.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST)
Overview
The PAEMST awards are the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics, science, computer science, engineering, and technology applications. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. Since 1983, more than 4,200 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. The National Science Foundation, which manages PAEMST on behalf of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), provides each awardee $10,000. Michelle Duphorne was selected as the 2023 math PAEMST National Awardee for the state of Texas. Ms. Duphorne teaches middle and high school mathematics for Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute in Grand Prairie ISD, Grand Prairie, TX.
Sarah DiMaria was selected as the 2021 math PAEMST national awardee for the state of Texas. Ms. DiMaria teaches high school mathematics for Cedars International Next Generation High School in Austin, TX.
In Texas, the 2024–2025 application cycle concluded in March, and a review committee selected three finalists in mathematics and three finalists in science. These finalists will proceed to the national review, from which the 2024–2025 national awardees will be selected.
The following three educators are the Texas mathematics finalists for 2024–2025:
- Carolyn Hise, Algebra I, Independent Study in Mathematics, and AP Calculus AB and BC at Georgetown High School in Georgetown, Texas
- Tim McMahon, AP Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB, and AP Statistics at Kaufman High School in Kaufman, Texas
- Sara Stieg, seventh grade honors mathematics and eighth grade Algebra I at North Ridge Middle School in North Richland Hills, Texas
The 2023–2024 competition recognized kindergarten through grade 6 mathematics and science teachers whose innovative methods bring teaching to life in the classroom.
The following three educators are the Texas mathematics finalists for 2023–2024:
- Tracy Fumo teaches grade 5 at Caldwell Performing Arts Academy in Tyler, TX.
- Lauren Palos teaches grade 4 math and science at Stuchbery Elementary School in Pasadena ISD in Pasadena, TX.
- Mark Rogers teaches grade 5 at Austin Achieve Middle School, Austin, TX.
